..... Most universities hold the right to exploit all technical inventions made by their academics, although universities usually gives the inventors a share of profits made from them. Universities grant licences to businesses to develop the inventions and make money from them, in return for a variety of payments, such as one-off flat fees and royalties.

Cutting-edge licensing deals include a "compression sock" developed by University College London. The sock, used in hospitals and on long air flights to prevent embolism, is sold by Griffiths & Nielsen, a distributor of science and healthcare products ......
